In parts 1-4 of this series, I showed that both the GOP platform goals, and the prominent values espoused by conservatives are not consistent with scriptural values. In this part of the series, I will provide some thoughts on how Democratic goals and attitudes compare to scripture. Here, as in previous articles of this series, I chose quotes from the King James version, although I replaced the archaic thee/thou/ye with current forms, and changed the “eth” on verbs for readability. I added definition in parenthesis where I felt it necessary.

The Democratic Party Platform begins with a preamble that lays out the values of the party. While there are a number of values that do not relate directly to scriptural principles (like a good economy), here are some that do relate to scriptural principles:

  1. We know that our nation’s long struggle with race is far from over.
  2. We believe in helping Americans balance work and family without fear of punishment or penalty.
  3. We firmly believe that the greed, recklessness, and illegal behavior on Wall Street must be brought to an end.
  4. Above all, Democrats are the party of inclusion. We know that diversity is not our problem—it is our promise. As Democrats, we respect differences of perspective and belief, and pledge to work together to move this country forward, even when we disagree. With this platform, we do not merely seek common ground—we strive to reach higher ground.
  5. We believe in protecting civil liberties and guaranteeing civil rights and voting rights.

These goals seem consistent with scriptural priorities, see:

Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Matthew 22:38-39 This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Matthew 25:35-40 For I was hungry, and you gave me meat: I was thirsty, and you gave me drink: I was a stranger, and you took me in: Naked, and you clothed me: I was sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we you hungry, and fed you? or thirsty, and gave you drink? When saw we you a stranger, and took you in? or naked, and clothed you? Or when saw we you sick, or in prison, and came unto you? And the King shall answer and say to them, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as you have done it to one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it to me.

And what does scripture say about those who do not obey these principles, like the goals of the GOP, including limiting our society’s social safety net?

Matthew 25:41-45: Then shall he say also to them on the left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungry, and you gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and you took me not in: naked, and you clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and you visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we you hungry, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto you? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.

Matthew 18:5-6 And who shall receive one such little child in my name receives me. But who shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Matthew 3:10    And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Matthew 15:7    You hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draws nigh unto me with their mouth, and honors me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

And what about distributing aid to “those lazy thugs and welfare queens”?

Matthew 5:44-45 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That you may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

There seems to be some thinking among conservatives that illegal aliens are “breaking the rules”. They think it is ok to immigrate (as long as it doesn’t affect me), but “they ought to follow the rules”. Some background: there were religious rules in Leviticus and Deuteronomy about how to sacrifice sheep/cows/grain/oil for each of one’s committed sins. Also that no work was to be done on the Sabbath, to keep it holy and dedicated to God. It is clear that God cares about sin, and these were and are His laws. But about following the laws when someone would suffer by them? Here is what scripture says about it:

Matthew 12:7    But if you had known what this means, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the guiltless.

Matthew 12:10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath days? that they might accuse him. And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the Sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath days.

In an earlier article, I commented in detail on this online rant, but I repeat it here to show how a lot of conservative republicans feel about what is going on in America.

“It happened because you banned super-size sodas. And smoking in parks. And offensive ideas on campus. Because you branded people who oppose gay marriage ‘homophobic’, and people unsure about immigration ‘racist’. Because you treated owning a gun and never having eaten quinoa as signifiers of fascism. Because you thought correcting people’s attitudes was more important than finding them jobs. Because you turned ‘white man’ from a description into an insult. Because you used slurs like ‘denier’ and ‘dangerous’ against anyone who doesn’t share your eco-pieties. Because you treated dissent as hate speech and criticism of Obama as extremism. Because you talked more about gender-neutral toilets than about home repossessions. Because you beatified Caitlyn Jenner. Because you policed people’s language, rubbished their parenting skills, took the piss out of their beliefs. Because you cried when someone mocked the Koran but laughed when they mocked the Bible. Because you said criticizing Islam is Islamophobia. Because you kept telling people, “You can’t think that, you can’t say that, you can’t do that”. Because you turned politics from something done by and for people to something done to them, for their own good. Because you treated people like shit. And people don’t like being treated like shit. Trump happened because of you.”

Does any of this sound like it is consistent with scripture? These attitudes are deserving of scorn. These are NOT Christian attitudes. Christ told us how to think, and how to act. The conservative Christians who find the above kind of thinking less than abhorrent should remember scripture’s words:

Matthew 23:14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayer: therefore you shall receive the greater damnation.

Matthew 24:48-51 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delays his coming; And shall begin to hit his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looks not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Luke 13:26-28 Then shall you begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in your presence, and you have taught in our streets. But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence you are; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth

Conservative Christian Republicans, wake up. The goal of this life is not to make yourself rich, or to push American patriotism to its limits. The GOP is not a fit group to receive Christian support. This party and your actions are not scriptural. Complain all you want about how government, or democrats are corrupt. At least their goals are aligned with scripture. Get with democrats and fix whatever problems you think you see. Be charitable, kind, find ways to fix government so MORE can be done for the disadvantaged.

Matthew 7:2 For … with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you again.
