Trump has decided to pay for the border wall by imposing a 20 percent import tax on consumer goods coming out of Mexico.

Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the tax is part of a more comprehensive package Republicans were working on, which includes taxes on imports coming into the country. He dodged questions, however, on the effect the tax might have on US consumers.

The import tax would likely cause prices to increase sharply on goods produced across the border, which would in turn force consumers to either pay the higher price or look elsewhere for discounted goods. Business leaders in the US will likely meet the news of Trump’s decision with opposition.
